Lichfield Cathedral School Sports scholar, Matthew White, 14, is celebrating after being named as the 2018 captain of the junior golf section at The Belfry.

Matthew is based at The National Academy under the watchful eye of PGA Professional, Phil Akers, currently nominated for the coach of the year award by England Golf. Playing for the last 6 years Matt has developed his game to achieve a single figure handicap and has also recently been included in the Warks County Boys u16 squad.

White said “Its a real honour to be named as the junior captain at such a club as The Belfry with all its history with the Ryder Cup.  Junior golf is very much alive and flourishing here and it will be a privilege to lead our outstanding group of juniors in 2018.”

Akers added “Matthew has worked extremely hard at The Belfry over the last two years and he will lead the section with great conviction.”

Matt, who is a Manchester City fan has already had one Belfry occasion to remember, in 2017 he managed to grab the golf bag of his hero, Pep Guardiola, and caddied for him all weekend at the Icons of Football event on The Brabazon course.

This is a modern golf and leisure complex that doesn’t like to sit still and the steady growth in popularity of the club since its opening in 1995 has enabled the family ownership to put investment back into the course and facilities.
