It was a grey, dull Wednesday November 10th with drizzle in the air at Woodhall Spa, the Home of England Golf, but nothing could dampen the spirits of the Charnwood Forest ladies’ Annodata team, their caddies and many supporters, there for the quarter finals.

A practice round and overnight stay was necessary for the 9.30 start which was slightly delayed because of all the photos being taken by the sponsors.

All but one of the team of Julia Booth, Annette O’Meara, Pauline Milner, Helen Sherratt and Chloe Edmonds were receiving shots from their low handicapped opposition but nevertheless, to play away from home is always challenging, even with shots.

Our two courses are very different in many ways but fortunately we had had the pleasure of playing at Woodhall already so knew of the difficulties that lie ahead. On the front nine the matches were mixed – up in some, down in some but as the back nine progressed, so did the nail biting.

The long, flat Hotchkin course, with its very long carries and some cheeky bunkers was always going to be testing for our players but after four matches had finished, it was all square…. Over to our youngest player Chloe (pictured here with Lady Captain Annie Martin (left) and team Captain Jane Bevan) , who’d travelled up from university the evening before. The previous day at our ladies’ prize giving, Chloe had been awarded Golfer of the Year, having won many medals and trophies. Chloe, playing the Woodhall Annodata Captain, was two down after the 15th hole. Could she come back? After some superb golf, it was all square after 18 – onto the 19th and sudden death!

The crowd was now about 35-40 strong (26 from Charnwood!) and all were holding their breath. On the 20th the Woodhall player found some difficulties but Chloe, unperturbed, drove straight down the middle followed by an iron shot towards the green, again placed beautifully centrally.

It was all but over. Within a few more minutes, the opposition had conceded and yes…. we’d won! It was such an emotional and exciting experience; we were all exhausted.

Now we are looking forward to travelling to the Grand Final at the Montecastillo Golf Resort in Cadiz, Spain in March 2022. We would like to thank the Woodhall Spa team for their warm welcome and generous hospitality after the match. We would also like to thank the sponsors, Michael and Liam of Annodata, for their continued support of this wonderful competition.

Thanks to Jane Bevan, CFGC Annodata Team Captain for words and images who concluded..

Lastly, I would like to say a huge thank you to our team, squad, caddies and supporters for all their loyalty and good wishes.  Although Charnwood is a small club, there is enormous support for all our teams and a great feeling of camaraderie.”

The Annodata competition began way back in the spring and the CFGC ladies had a bye in the first round before overcoming Derby GC, Beedles Lake (B) (Image 2), Beedles Lake (A) (Image 3), Luffenham Heath (Image 1), Gog Magog, then finally and memorably, Woodhall Spa.

The ladies will compete with teams from Leigh GC, East Devon GC and Nizels G&CC in Spain, full report in our April 2022 edition and online.
