Warley Woods Golf Club member Charlie Jones swapped golf clubs for greetings cards when he celebrated his milestone 90th birthday at the club on January 14th

With golfing friends and family, he took to the course with a selection of antique golf clubs – older than his 90 years, and in addition, received an honorary life membership of the club to add to the day’s enjoyment.

Charlie has many happy memories of playing golf at Warley Woods for over 80 years.  From a very young age, his father gave him great encouragement to take up the game, and indeed, Charlie has a family photograph here where he is aged two years old holding a golf club.

As a youngster in the 1930s, Charlie lived locally in Pottery Road Warley, and a regular after school activity was to stroll up to Warley Woods to sneak under the metal fence onto the course with one club, a putter and a found ball.

There, they would play a few holes until one of the group spotted the park keeper and they would scarper off through the corner gate onto Harborne Road.  Being a good athlete (in his late teens Charlie was a member of West Bromwich Harriers) he never got caught!

In the early 1950s Charlie joined Warley Woods as a paid-up club member. Saturdays were his customary playing day, he paid 1s 9d for a round of golf which included the hire of a set of clubs, a new Dunlop 65 ball, three new tees and a lecture from Bert Fereday, the club professional at Warley.

Bert handed out directives on etiquette, how to behave on the course, reminders to replace the divots, and instructions to rake the bunkers.  Charlie’s uncle, Tom Jones was a green keeper at this time at Warley.  Uncle Tom gave him much support and gradually over the years Charlie realised many trophy achievements playing golf at the club. Among them the 1955 Vice Captain’s Prize, 1956 Final Medal Winner and the 1958 Earle Cup Winner.  At one time his handicap was six.  Over the years, Charlie has also been a member of Brandhall, Dudley and Harborne Church Farm Golf Clubs.

These days, Charlie is especially fond of the popular 9-hole mid-week comp at Warley Woods, preferring the freedom of carrying his golf clubs – he has no intention of using a trolley!

Happy 90th birthday Charlie from your golfing friends, and all the members at Warley Woods Golf Club.
