DROITWICH HOLDS JUNIOR GIRLS OPEN

Droitwich Golf Club Stage 38th Junior Girls Open – A Telegraph Vitality Junior Golf Championship Qualifier

The weather was on side at Droitwich for the rescheduled 2018 Junior Girls Open held on Thursday 31st May.
 .
Traditionally this event, now in its 38th year, is held on Maundy Thursday, but the wet weather at the start of the year forced the club to move the event to a  reserve date to qualify for the Telegraph Vitality Junior Golf Championship.
.
20 girl golfers representing 18 golf clubs from around the country took to the tee for the 18 hole competition. Leading the field was last year’s gross winner Sophie Johnson from Enville Golf Club, playing off +1.
.
The last to tee off in this competition were four girls who competed in last year’s 9 hole competition. Two 10-year-old girls Madeline Bader (Halesowen, 36) and Emma Buckley (Bromsgrove, 36) would have played in the 9 hole competition on the original March date this year, but with commitment, dedication and hard work over the last two months reduced their handicaps to 36 to compete in the 18 hole competition.

Similarly, Holly Murphy (Kings Norton, 35) and Anabel Crowder (Gaudet Luce, 24) competed last year in the 9 hole competition which Anabel won with 42 Gross. This year they came in with 2nd and 3rd Nett prizes respectively, with Holly taking just 31 shots on the back nine.
 .
Watching this progression is very important to the ladies at Droitwich Golf Club. Event organiser Jo Slade commented “Our Junior Girls Open was started in 1980 by club members Sylvia and Jimmy Gray who wanted to create a platform to promote girls golf. Now, 38 years on, the essence of the competition remains one of development and encouragement. It is just fantastic to see the girls return each year with improved games, lower handicaps and a passion for the game of golf.”
The Cup was won by Isabelle Badger (Halesowen, 19) with a Nett 69 (Front 37, Back 32). Isabelle is 12 years old and has played in the Droitwich Junior Girls Open 4 times, firstly in the 9 hole competition aged 8, and three times in the 18 hole competition. Isabelle’s handicap has been cut to 18 following her winning round at Droitwich.

On accepting The Cup Isabelle gave a touching speech and thanked the green keepers for presenting the course so well, the organisers for arranging the day, and her fellow competitors for attending.
 .
These words, and the manner in which they were delivered, very much echoed the spirit of the day at Droitwich. The girls were, without exception, very polite, friendly and gracious. They were heard to encourage their playing partners and acknowledge good play. Organiser Janet Slade said “I was very impressed by the way all the girls conducted themselves both on and off the course. All were in high spirits and enthusiastic for the competition and were a credit to themselves and their respective clubs.”
 .
The gross competition was won by Izzy Lloyd (Tewkesbury Park, 8) with a gross 78 and was followed in 2nd by Katie Symonds (Aston Wood, 8) with a gross 80 and 3rd gross Sophie Johnson with 81 (Enville, +1).

Izzy Lloyd and Isabelle Badger will be entered into The Telegraph Vitality Junior Golf Championship 2018. Droitwich ladies will be keeping an eye on the leader boards to see if they make it to the final which will be held at PGA Catalunya, Barcelona. The event is viewed as junior golf’s ‘major’ and Droitwich is proud to host a qualifying competition for girls.
