Back in April when lockdown had lifted and golf had started to return to some sort of normal – Little Aston commenced their journey in search of the Taskers Trophy having been runners up in 2019.

Playing their first two matches at home against Whittington Heath due to Covid restrictions, they went on to play Aston Wood, Erewash Valley, Lingdale A and Lees Hall before finally meeting Lingdale B at Beeston Fields in Nottingham for the final.

Little Aston formed quite a bond with the ladies of Lingdale Golf Club, having played their A team in August at Lingdale to then find themselves back there playing their Semi Final against Lees Hall on neutral ground. Lingdale B then played their semi-final at Little Aston, before the face off against Lingdale B in the finals.

Captain Jilly Cosgrove said that they had received so much support and encouragement for the final from other Staffordshire clubs, encouraging them to bring the trophy back to Staffordshire and it was a proud moment to finally lift the Ian Burtoft Trophy having beaten Lingdale B 5.5 – 1.5.

It’s been an exciting journey and every match has been a joy to play in.  Several matches over the six month period have had to go down the 19th keeping everyone on tenterhooks as they could have gone either way.

“I’m so grateful to the ladies of Little Aston and the squad of 16 players and reserves who have so willingly contributed to the success of our performance throughout the tournament – its been an absolute pleasure to organise the matches,” enthused Jilly.

The ladies from Little Aston received fantastic support from their club members who fervently followed their progress throughout the last six months and supported on the day of the final.  Needless to say Lady Captain Breda Moloney was delighted to witness the girls win after what she describes as a truly shocking 12 months in most people’s lives.

The Taskers Trophy covers seven counties and supports grass roots Junior Golf in all those counties.  Last year they shared £7,000 and each county put the funds to some great use for their junior sections.
