SSGS (Shrewsbury Swingers Golf Society) came from humble beginnings – 3 friends getting together as often as they could to play golf at Arscott Golf Club– a mere two and a half years ago. As our love for the game of golf grew, so did the group of people who showed interest in joining us for days of (sometimes) great golf, great banter and great experiences – watching people chase golf trolley’s into lakes is definitely an experience our society won’t forget! As a society we now put on events every month between February and November for 30+ members, the majority of whom are friends or family, however, we welcome anyone and everyone that loves golf as much as we do.

Every year we play courses across Shropshire, Cheshire, North Wales and further afield, putting on excellent golf days at a number of fantastic clubs. We consider our “home course” to be Arscott Golf Club in Hanwood, Shropshire and each year we host our Captains Day event here – they have always been extremely welcoming and accommodating, and a number of our society members are also club members there.

SSGS run a number of themed events throughout the year including The Masters (yes you win the green jacket!), The Ryder Cup (held at four-time Ryder Cup venue – The Belfry Hotel – over the course of a weekend) and The Welsh Open. As we continue to grow, we are constantly looking for new opportunities to put on great golf days both locally and abroad – planning is well under way for an Open Championship event in Scotland at the time of writing this article. We are keen to reward our members for being part of the society and we offer some fantastic prizes at each event including trophies, balls, clubs and a huge range of golf accessories.

We also aim to keep the competition fair and interesting, and as such, we aim to change what prizes are on offer at each event we run.

Throughout the year we run a number of season long competitions including the SSGS version of FedEx points – points are collected dependant on placings at events throughout the year culminating in an SSGS FedEx champion at the end of the season – and the prize for the most improved player over the season as voted for by the Chairman, Captain and Handicap Secretary/ Treasurer of the society.

We never take ourselves too seriously, love a post round beer and definitely know how to have a laugh (usually at a society members expense after losing 3 balls on the first tee – yes that happened!)
