With a new club professional Phil Cary starting at the back end of summer 2016 and a new greenkeeping regime out there on the golf course, the season just passed has seen The Manor (Kingstone) in Staffs reaping the benefits of change. Repeat business has been strong, membership has risen and a new breed of society golfers have been attracted to this beautiful Uttoxeter based venue.

The golf course measures in at just over the 6,000 yard mark but tends to play a little longer than that, considering its landscape of rolling and attractive farmland. Changes of elevation are frequent but it’s never too tough a walk and the views from the higher points are quite lovely. You feel a million miles from anywhere, as relaxing an environment as it’s possible to find anywhere.

The River Blythe is a haven for wildlife and brings the undoubted highlights, meandering as it does around two stretches of the lower reaches of the layout. To keep a dry ball is an achievement in itself, the sternest test comes at the short par four signature 14th named ‘Enigma’. True risk and reward, the daring shot shapers will enjoy this, from a high up tee, thoughts of grandeur are difficult to resist. It is reachable too, we’ve managed it – but we’ve found plenty of grief as well!

A golf course that has a route map all of it’s very own and is packed with variety too. You’ll find use for every club in the bag, including the driver on two spectacular par fives either side of the turn. The USGA standard greens offer a reassuring indication that you can enjoy a quality round in the off-season too.

19th hole – When it’s all over and you’ve hopefully conquered a lovely course with all of its quirks you must stick around to enjoy the convivial facilities, cosy club room and very English home cooked food whilst relaxing with a well earned pint. The Manor is probably the friendliest club we know, nothing is too much trouble.

Plus if you’ve been fortunate enough to play on a sunny spring day, grab a seat on the balcony and recount your triumphs and woes with a view to die for over practically the whole course and miles beyond, it’s a special spot.

Gaudet Luce Golf Club

Gaudet Luce – Major host

This is a modern golf and leisure complex that doesn’t like to sit still and the steady growth in popularity of the club since its opening in 1995 has enabled the family ownership to put investment back into the course and facilities.

125 years – South Staffs GC

The South Staffordshire Club is always a special visit. Nestled in the leafy suburbs of Wolverhampton, a traditional members club with a much admired parkland course that never fails to impress. Messrs Vardon, Colt, Braid and more recently Donald Steel have all played their parts in creating a layout that charms, teases and yields a low score very reluctantly.
