Tom Matthews, who plays his golf out of Oswestry Golf Club in Shropshire entered the second year of his junior college scholarship at Eastern Florida State College looking to set himself up for a move to senior college.

Tom proceeded to finish inside the top 5 in all 6 events that were held before the CoronaVirus pandemic took hold and his season was cut short.

Tom won once, finished second three times and fourth twice and whilst the records look good he still felt he had more to give.

“My game was in good shape, but I was leaving one or two shots a round out there, so I know I could have done more given the chance,” he stated.

This record saw him selected as one of the five top players in the NJCAA Division 1, a highly regarded honour over in the states and one which he is rightly proud of.

Tom has also just been shortlisted for the prestigious 2020 Jack Nicklaus NJCAA National Player of the Year Award, alongside 5 other golfers from all across Junior College golf in America, no small feat for this young aspiring tour player.

Tom goes on to say “It’s a great honour to be shortlisted for this award, and hopefully it is a stepping stone to my dream of playing on the PGA Tour.”

Tom got introduced to the game at the tender age of 6 by his father Rhys and he would come up through the ranks at Oswestry Golf Club where their junior programme has produced some exceptional golfers over the years.

Tom has represented Shropshire & Herefordshire as well as playing numerous times for the Welsh team.  He has also competed in a number of leading amateur events including the British Amateur and Open qualifying.

Fate has dealt Tom an unfortunate blow, and despite him being confirmed to go on to Appalachian College to continue his golf at a senior college, the coronavirus pandemic has meant this option is no longer available to him.  Tom has been offered a place back at EFSC, but is reliant on the pandemic easing, so he is currently reviewing all options and practicing hard.

One thing is for certain though, Tom has a bright future ahead of him in the game of golf and we wish him well.
