In one week in August, young golfers from Derbyshire achieved three outstanding victories in regional events, two of them the first time for the county.
For the first time ever, Derbyshire have won the U14 Boy’s Keith Tripp Trophy at Lingdale Golf Club. The youngsters, captained by Jay Whatley emerged victorious vs three other local counties, the undoubted highlight being a first ever hole in one on the 18th from young Jamie Hunt.
Three days later a team of young girls took part in a jamboree of girls’ golf at Branston Golf Club in Staffordshire. The event brought together almost 150 girls from all over the region, Derbyshire’s second team were competing at the event in a final against Lincolnshire.
Captained by Olivia Barker-Sabido, they overcame a strong Lincs team by 3 ½ – 1 ½. 12-year-old Neve Flowers, on her debut, holed a 10-foot putt for birdie to close out the victory, the first time the Derbyshire girls have ever won this event.
Finally the Derbyshire Boys Under 18s squad, captained by Quinn Tinkler emerged victorious in the West Midlands League and will go on to play the East Midlands with the winner being crowned Midlands champions. The boys will play Lincolnshire in the final of an event Derbyshire have only won once before in their history.
