The Hawthorns Golf Society from Birmingham was formed in 2010 by a current member of the society who ran it until 2022 which is when I took over the reins.
We have the society capped at 32 members with a small waiting list of people hoping to join.
We play six weekend society matches from April-September, playing for various trophies depending on handicaps. However, in September we play for the Gold Cup and the Hawthorns Green Jacket. (The original jacket was found in a lost property box at Ombersley GC and was presented to the winner as a bit of a joke but has been presented to the Golf Cup winner ever since.)
We play a stableford format on each society day and also run an individual matchplay competition throughout the year. We also have a Champion Golfer trophy that we play for which is awarded to the player who scores the most accumulated pts from five out of the six society days we play. The best trophy that no one wants to win is our Joker Trophy which comes with a jester hat complete with bells.
We play a separate match in June each year in memory of a HGS member (Mick) who sadly passed away in September 2022.
We hold a charity fund raising event on the night of the golf day in aid of Birmingham Hospice and Cancer Research UK. A total of £1,010 was raised in June this year which is a fantastic amount from a relatively small society. This shows how highly Mick was thought of.
We also travel to either Devon or Bournemouth each May for a few days playing golf and have a foreign break every other year in early September.
It truly is a fantastic golf society to be a part of and feel privileged to be able to run it on behalf of everyone associated with it.
