The Midlands Society Championships returned to our calendar for the first time in a few years at a dry and sunny Great Barr Golf Club on Monday September 28th. 16 local societies, a fourball from each took part, a few of whom had been competing in this event with us for many years, since the very first Society Championships at Forest of Arden back in 2016.
It was especially nice to round off our season with Rolls Royce (PTF) Society from Derby, Abbey Panels GS (Nuneaton) and NASS from Droitwich, the three societies whose own invitational golf days we had attended this summer. We met new groups to our events too, and generally speaking, everybody had a great day out.
The prime reason for that was our host club and course, Great Barr has been earning rave reviews lately for the quality and consistent standard of their layout, you can add 64 society golfers to that fanzone, plus four Midlands Golfer staff members, we were all suitably impressed.
It all concluded at 5.30 pm, and the teams gathered in the clubhouse for Lasagne and chips as we collected the scorecards. In the end it was the younger societies, the 30 somethings that reached the top of the leaderboard.
Friday Club from Stonebridge GC finished third, NASS, with magazine ambassador Griff captaining finished as runners-up, pipped to the title by the DMH Society from Solihull who became our society champions for 2026. Great golf they all played, congratulations to them and thanks to all teams for taking part.
A big thanks to the club for hosting, the refreshments and service too. To Club Choice Ireland for the first prize donation that we’re sure the DMH lads will enjoy next year. Also, to all the local clubs who helped with the prize table and the fourballs for the auction. Our personal thanks to our Tony ‘Mr Notts’ Rogers, magazine distributor and organiser of the Willowbrook Golf Society, who let his lads play the competition and helped us instead, especially with the scorecards.
