Mid-September saw the MGALS (Midlands Golfer Amateur Ladies Society) converge to the beautiful course that is Shifnal in Shropshire, to play in our autumn get together.
Blighted by persistently poor weather in the lead up to the event, Shifnal was in immaculate condition, and we were lucky not to have a drop of rain on the day. 48 took part and the MGALS made me proud by wearing pink as the date coincided with Organ Donation Awareness week and I was humbled by the sea of pink around the course as the teams played in the AM-AM format.
Our winners were Laurielle Tudor, Paula Rushton, Jane Want and Steve Clayton from the home club (pictured L.)
In 2nd place Carol and Andy Alford, Kay and Paul Marshall (Branston, centre)
In 3rd Dee and Kevin Walker, Debbie Mortimer (Shifnal) and Lisa Devereux (Enville, R)
Our evening buffet was superb and major thanks go to Shirley Matthews, Director of Marketing, who was instrumental in the success of the day. We have been friends for a long time working together with the County Girls and her contributions to our event were invaluable. Huge thanks as well go to the Shifnal staff and greenkeepers.
ABOUT THE SOCIETY
Our MGALS have been enjoying golf days and 36-hole overnighters too across the Midlands since 2017. Originally as a ladies only society, it soon became clear that the fun we were all enjoying together was catching the eyes and ears of jealous partners too. So now we’re very much a mixed society, golfing husbands and partners are completely welcomed to join in.
Golfing ability isn’t overly important at all, some of our current MGALS had barely picked up a golf club when they first joined us, now they never miss an event. It’s the fun element that makes us special, those dining rooms post event are permanently full of laughter. That often spills into the bar areas too later on, especially during our overnight occasions, they can be pretty lively!
Plus of course it’s very important that our gatherings continue to raise funds and awareness towards local charity causes too, that will continue on in 2025.
To become an MGAL – email organiser Mandy at ladyeditor@midlandsgolfer.co.uk – it’s that simple, she’ll not ask you for a handicap, it’s more likely you’ll be talking about your favourite gin flavour!
