OUR VALUES MEET YOUR EXPECTATIONS
A CLUB WITH TRADITIONAL VALUES AND A CONTEMPORARY FEEL. A GREAT QUALITY COURSE WITH MODERN FACILITIES AND A WARM, WELCOMING ENVIRONMENT.
Trentham Golf Club is a regular Open Championship qualifying venue which will host no less than five major events in 2019, adding a touch of gloss to their special 125th anniversary year.
Trentham GC was formed and recognised by the R&A in 1894, the present 6700 yard course we play today was designed by Harry Colt in the 1920s. The parkland layout is set in the former estate of the Duke of Sutherland with golf holes of good looks and variety meandering around the tree-lined landscape.
Championship standard courses tend to be reluctant to yield good scores easily and Trentham is no exception although here it’s not always done in an obvious manner. What they have is a very strategic challenge, Trentham specialises in the subtle elements of the game to test its golfers.
All of the major hazards are right there in front of you to see. It is what you don’t notice that will surprise you. Gentle greenside banking and modest looking humps and bumps that put you in unfortunate areas where its difficult to rescue a par chipping onto fast and slippery greens that have enough subtleties of their own. You might get away with a few wayward drives, the rough is not too penalising and there is usually a route out of the tree line, but your short game will truly be challenged.
Two distinct loops of nine, the outward half takes you all around the outer borders of the course, offering some lovely views of the surrounding countryside and one looking over a Potteries city skyline walking down the downhill ninth, a par four that takes you conveniently back to the side of the clubhouse.
Three excellent holes run in succession at the far side of the course, the sixth, a challenging 547yard par five has water and craftily placed bunkers in view from the tee but is a reasonable birdie chance. The following par three plays long with another pond to steer clear of and a subtle hazard on the right, then the index 1 par 4 8th hole, an uphill hole with penal rough on the left side and the most obdurate pair of oak trees perched on the top of the hill. Beyond these is a large green sloping back to front and left to right depending on the position of the flag. A true test.
On to the back nine the 12th is the prettiest of par threes , a real club selection dilemma here to cross the deep ditch to a putting surface that appears to be a lot closer than it really is. A recent addition to this hole is the pot hole bunkers in front of the green, a real challenge to your bunker play
The 14th hole is a scenic treat and something of a tempting prospect too. A downhill running par five that is reachable in two if you can thread your ball around the network of fairway traps plus those that lie in wait in front of the green.
Some truly excellent driving holes here, the peak of which arrives at the 16th, a gentle dogleg from left to right, and the delicious looking rows of Scotch Pines on the left side may have you comparing this view to something special north of the border. The 16th Green is also deceptive as it falls from left to right so an ideal approach shot is to the left.
The par five home hole may look a little generous on the card but has one final sting in the tail. A fitting climax for this thinker’s golf course on probably the trickiest green of all, running downhill all the way and adjacent to the clubhouse.
