Market Drayton GC, Open for golf again – June 3rd 2020

What a start to the year 2020. Firstly, the constant deluge of rain, then the COVID 19 lockdown, all this wonderful sunshine and perhaps a hosepipe ban to come. Market Drayton GC has met these challenges head-on and our great course and the friendly club is back to welcoming members, societies visitors and guests.

Like most clubs, we had to furlough most of our staff but the skeleton staff that were able to work did a superb job in maintaining our fabulous course. Simon Cotterill, the Head greenkeeper in his 30th year at the club, has never been faced with such challenges. As ever, he used all his experience and knowledge to rise to the occasion. He was ably assisted by our Club Professional, Phil Toomer and on course resident Hilary Taylor who were redeployed as temporary greenkeepers. Both welcomed the opportunity to be engaged in useful service that also helped to retain their sanity and wellbeing.

During the period of lockdown members could be seen walking the perimeter of the course, admiring the excellent condition but greatly frustrated at not being able to play. Members were observed riding, and in some cases falling off their bicycles, embarking on the many beautiful walks around the area in an effort to maintain their fitness and mental well- being. Golfers were heard telling stories of how they were using make-shift practice nets, chipping over flower beds and into plant pots in an effort to maintain their golfing skills.

The club management team and staff, have had frequent conference calls to discuss the changing situation and have carefully and successfully lead us through these difficult times. Members were kept fully informed with regular updates. Our members were very understanding and supportive and were disciplined in sticking to the new protocols. This enabled a careful return to playing golf within the government guidelines. Even the resident Pheasants were seen to be observing the distancing advice by keeping two meters apart.

Our great value, on course bungalow, which sleeps eight people is available for rental later in the year, subject to the COVID 19 restrictions. Bookings are beginning to flow in, so now is the time to book your “staycation golfing break”.

The virus came at a time when member subscriptions were due and golfers had to justify this expense. A small number had to defer payment due to current circumstances but fortunately the members as a whole were extremely supportive enabling the club to weather this difficult period. We are pleased to welcome a number of new members who recently joined as part of our range of great value memberships offers.

Our fabulous, must-play course is open for good value golf and we look forward providing a warm welcome to guests, visitors and societies.
