After 26 long old years, one of the Erdington STAGS has recorded our first hole in one! Another STAG, Brendan Donnelly had one at Nailcote Hall a few years ago, but it wasn’t recognised as it was said at the time, “Nailcote isn’t a proper golf course !!!”
But on Sunday 26th July at Calderfields GC, our STAGS President, Les Gwillym got a hole in one on the 166-yard 12th hole, at the ripe old age of 68. His own first ace and the (proper golf course) STAGS jinx was finally broken.
I was actually playing in a 3 ball in the group in front of Les, and we all actually witnessed the ball going in the hole, but because of trees, we couldn’t see who actually hit the shot!
Also with the STAGS – the annual STAGS v SPUDS match, our annual inter-society event was held at Wishaw GC on Fri 26th June.
32 players, 16 from each team, once again met on a blistering hot day in June to compete for the annual trophy. This year the SPUDS won the overall match with a score of 484 pts, to the STAGS 476 pts, making the score now 2 – 1 to the SPUDS.
The individual winners were:
Winner after countback – Mick King (SPUDS) 40 pts
Runner-Up – Ken Payne (SPUDS) 40 pts
3rd Place – Mick Grenham (STAGS) 38 pts
Overall, it was another fantastic day, with glorious weather, golf, food and beer, all enjoyed with great mates.
