We thought it might be fun if we followed one chosen Midlands society around the region this year and gave them a monthly spot in the magazine and online here to read how their season unfolds.

The Shrewsbury Swingers GS hail from Arscott GC near Shrewsbury – a relatively new group, formed from friendship in 2017 and now numbering 30 members. They’ve already organised themselves into a well-run outfit, monthly dates from Feb-Nov with many prizes and awards on offer, but never forgetting to let in the fun side of golf too.

Thanks to SSGS organiser Rich Dowley for writing the following reports for us.

Season Opener – OOM #1 – Played at – The Shropshire Golf Club – Muxton, Sunday Feb 27th

Weather – Sunshine, but breezy in places.

Format– Singles Stableford

Quirk – Club Roulette- each player picked out of a hat a club they would lose from their bag for the round. A nice way to make the day more fun.

A fantastic day was had by all – full English on arrival followed by 18 holes on the Silver/Gold courses. Both were in great condition after all the bad weather we have had.

All of the staff very welcoming and helpful.

1st place  – James Crowe – after an amazing round consisting of 11 pars in his round

2nd place – Nic Crosland

3rd place – Ben Cocker

NTP winner – Rich Dowley, who also got himself the wooden spoon prize, the novelty golf hat for the lowest score of the day.

OOM – Event 2 – Ludlow GC, Sunday March 13th

A great day out, a fantastic clubhouse and the course was in great condition. On the first tee the heavens opened, and we endured very heavy rain on the first two holes. The putting surfaces appeared a little soaked as a result but after 20/30 minutes they had drained away well and continued to be of a very high standard.

We finished the day with a carvery which was amazing, and we ate and did the presentation in our own private room. A great venue and all of the staff were absolutely brilliant.

Honours Board.

1st – Nic Crosland (on the right of the image)

2nd – Mike Jones

3rd – David Smout

*Following his win, Nic will now be playing off a scratch society handicap as every win sees the player’s handicap dropped by a shot.

Among the future dates for SSGS this season are a home fixture at Arscott in May for their Masters event, a first trip to Leominster in early June, then a representation at the MG Par 3 Championships at Nailcote Hall in late June.

They are also set to visit the Midlands Indoor Golf Centre in Cannock for a special Christmas occasion to see off the year in style in December.

We’ll cover all of their 2022 events in Midlands Golfer.
