We are the Miners Arms Golf Society, formed in our local, The Miners Arms in Nuneaton around six years ago.

We play on different golf courses, usually one a month, in March, April, June, July, August, September and October. Among our 40 strong membership are four ladies, one of whom is the pub’s landlady Lynne.

If we can find a golf club to have us, we also hold a Christmas event, usually over 9 holes, with all participants having to dress in Christmas costume.

We have had Santa, a reindeer, a Christmas pudding and a turkey all playing golf. Such an event usually sees all ending back at the Miners Arms pub for a few beers and some tall stories.

Our hosts at the Miners Arms are Brian and Lynne Morris, and they know how to pull a good pint and always offer a warm welcome. (Unless you misbehave!)

During our golf season, we have a small prize for the winner of the day, but more importantly throughout the season, we run an Order of Merit competition. A member must have played in five events to qualify, as the Order of Merit title is awarded to the member with the best average over his/her best five games.

One member Sean Morris has won this accolade for the last three Years! We do have a nice cup on which to engrave the names of the winners and this sits in a trophy cabinet in the Miners Arms.

Until recently, the society had a President, an office that changed on an annual basis. Each President nominated a charity for the year and the charity benefitted initially from bunker money. That is every bunker on a golf course was nominated as the President’s bunker and players that went in one had to pay one pound to his/her charity.

Any member who got round without going in a bunker had to pay two pounds to the charity.

Other ways of raising funds would also be introduced by the president. Last year, for example, our President, Bob (2 Stix) Marston held a Quiz in the Miners Arms and this, along with donations and Bunker Money raised £750 for the Hematology and Oncology Trust at the George Eliot Hospital.

This year the society decided to replace the office of President with that of Captain, the role of the Captain will be similar to that of the President.

A bit about me, my name is Tim Edwards, I am the Treasurer and the Handicap Secretary for the society, this year I also have the honour of becoming our first captain! My chosen charity for this year is local to the community and is the Mary Ann Evans Hospice.
