Celebrating 125 years in 2026, Birstall Golf Club has grown from a small village course into one of the Midlands’ most established and respected golf venues.

The club’s original directors included Charles Bennion, a prominent local figure who later donated Bradgate Park for public use. At the time, Birstall itself was a village of just 611 according to the 1901 census – the village now has over 14,000 residents according to the latest census.

Early accessibility helped shape its popularity. With nearby rail links via the Great Central Railway, visiting societies regularly travelled to the course. Notably, in 1926, delegates from the British Pharmaceutical Conference journeyed from Leicester to Birstall for a day of sporting activity – an early example of the club’s appeal beyond the immediate area.

The course itself, now measuring 6,239 yards (par 70), has remained central to the club’s reputation. Known for its tree-lined fairways and consistently high-quality greens, it continues to provide a balanced challenge for golfers of all abilities. Today, Birstall hosts a busy calendar of competitive golf and a range of county events that showcase leading amateur talent.

The club has also enjoyed notable competitive success. In 2015, a team from Birstall won the Corah Shield, progressing to win the Champion Club Tournament and represent England at the European Men’s Club Trophy in Cyprus – an achievement that underlines the strength of golf at Birstall.

A defining moment in the club’s modern history was the opening of its new clubhouse with panoramic views, reinforcing its status as a leading venue in Leicestershire and enhancing the overall member and visitor experience.

As it marks its 125th anniversary, Birstall Golf Club continues to balance heritage with progress – rooted in its history yet firmly focused on the future.
