This was the fourth year of the now ever popular, Gourmet Golf Classic, based out of Wexford in South East Ireland. Each year thus far we’ve seen a drop of the auld ‘Irish Mist’ fall from the sky at some point… but not 2018. Four days of wall-to-wall sunshine was promised for the arriving teams who travelled from all over the UK & Ireland. And it didn’t disappoint…
This unique event combines the best food with some of the best courses in the area giving all the visiting teams a real ‘local’ experience. It’s not a golf event like any other. Yes, there are some fantastic prizes to be won, but the emphasis has always been on the enjoyment rather than the competitiveness. The event has received a lot of praise since its inception for its format whereby all teams are split and rotated each day meaning by the end of the 3 days golf your team will have played opposite 12 different people. As you can imagine, this brings a real sense comradery to the event and makes for a very enjoyable Presentation Dinner on the final night.
Our overseas participants arrived in comfort on board one of the event sponsors ferries. Stena Line is an exclusive partner of event organiser Club Choice Ireland and were delighted to see so many happy travelling golfers make the trip from Holyhead & Fishguard. As per all previous years the luxurious, and recently renovated Clayton Whites Hotel was our base for all four nights. Located in the centre of Wexford Town, it’s the ideal spot from which to explore.
And let’s not forget the golf itself. Each day the teams tee off at a different golf course only a short drive from the hotel. Whether you enjoy links play or traditional parkland, Rosslare Golf Club, Wexford Golf Club and Enniscorthy Golf Club are always presented in superb condition and this year was no different.
Each evening the participants were treated to a different dining experience with three fabulous, award winning local restaurants providing the ‘Gourmet’ side of the event. Greenacres Bistro, The Yard and La Marine Bistro were all loved by the guests and had people belly aching from overdoing it.
Full details of the 2019 event are due to be announced soon but the dates are secured…make sure you have the 8th – 12th September in your diary for next year as it promises to be another ‘not to be missed’ golf event in Ireland! Teams will be limited for 2019 and will be on a first come basis. You can register your interest now by emailing info@clubchoiceireland.com
