In its 17th year the Peewee Tour again reached new heights with an increased number of youngsters registering for the five events….the Tour started in July at Oswestry, a pleasant Sunday saw over 50 players competing in the various age groups.. this was followed by competitions at other fine Shropshire and Herefordshire Golf Clubs,  Shrewsbury, Bridgnorth, the Grove in Herefordshire and finally at Shifnal in late August..

There are seven different age groups so no one competes against players of a very different strength.. The youngest this year being six years old and all groups were within the maximum age of 12.. rules are very friendly and players collect points for their finishing position at each venue, the totals being used to decide the Tour Champions at the final competition.. Shifnal, where again over 50 took part !

Tour Champions for 2019:-

Under 13 Boys   Harvey Barker, Ludlow…. U 13 Girls  Seren Ramsey, Henlle.

Under 11 Boys  Zach Banks, Shifnal………..U 10 Girls  Lily Griffiths, Shropshire.

Under 10 Boys  Ben Steventon, Telford……U 9 Boys   Harry Slater, Horsehay.

Under 8 Boys    Josh Alderton, The Grove.

The final Peewee fixture at Shifnal gave S & H the opportunity to present Mike with a gift on his retirement from his 17yrs of administration. Mike had been in charge of the event since its inception in 2003.. being a driving force in this area of S & H junior golf.. with well over 1000 players having enjoyed the Peewee tour…. some going on to great things like European Tour winner Aaron Rai.. & many playing at all age groups for the County…

Mike quoted:- “one thing I always say is the tour was not set up necessarily to promote the elite, but  to give children and parents 5 days out in the lovely S & H countryside where new friendships are made in a fun environment”

Supported by his wife Jan who was presented with a bouquet of flowers, both recognised that the biggest pleasure was to see the enjoyment  on the faces of all the players involved.

Mike also recognised the help of Judith Thornell ( Oswestry Junior Organiser) who has been at his side for all 17yrs & will continue in her role.

Chairman of Junior Golf Charles Sievewright saluted the achievements of Mike.”His dedication and enthusiasm for the job over the years has been incredible, & we all wish him well in his retirement”

Kathy James who has been involved in Junior Golf for many years at Shifnal has kindly agreed to take on the role in 2020.

The final Peewee event was our Annual Ryder Cup match against our good friends the Nott’s Nippers .

This is the equivalent Tour organised by the Nottingham Union of Golf and runs on the same lines as the Peewee Tour….The event provided a wonderful and very special day of junior golf..this year at the Shropshire Golf Club.. The morning fourballs finished with a tied points position.. 3 pts each,  and in the afternoon with only one match left on the course S & H were losing that session 6 pts to 5..it was left to Lily Griffiths aged 8 to hole an 18 foot put in the closing holes to tie the whole match.. The result meant the S & H retained the trophy which they had held from last year.

A fitting finale for Mike Roberts.
