Ex-major champion and Solheim Cup star and captain Alison Nicholas has been appointed as the new Warwickshire County Junior Organiser. We spoke to her about her new role early last month.
“I am delighted to have been appointed the Warwickshire County Junior Organiser and it gives me the opportunity to review the county junior coaching programme and look at ideas for encouraging more girls into the game. My responsibilities are mostly administrative, and I have restructured the coaching programme and appointed two very enthusiastic coaches to do the junior coaching sessions.”
At a pre-season at Kenilworth in March, Alison was introduced as the new county organiser and gave an overview of the new coaching plan and the target to introduce new U14 girls to golf in the county over a five-year period. The 2023 awards were presented and Maisie Halstead was introduced as well after her accepting her role as the new Warwicks Junior Captain for 2024.
“I will be still the 1st Team coach and I have introduced two county beginner hubs at Moor Hall (Alex Stockton) and at Kenilworth Golf Club, Oli (Pic 1) and Rory (Pic 2) to get more girls into the game in Warwickshire. The beginners hubs will run coaching sessions over the summer months and we will have an assessment day in October for the hub participants and then invite those successful players to join the county coaching programme in the autumn/winter months.”
“I am looking forward to arranging matches, watching, and encouraging the girls to play. Organising the Midlands South Girls Championship at Kenilworth in August will be a challenge and I am hoping that my experience as a tournament professional will stand me in good stead.
I am getting great support from Pat Hale, Elizabeth Earnshaw and the rest of the Junior Committee as well as the Executive Board of the Warwickshire Ladies County Golf Association.”
To be selected for coaching in 2024 juniors need to be a member of a Warwicks club or part of their academies. They don’t need an official handicap.
